If either the software developer or McDonald’s cashier experienced the right combination of job loss, personal tragedy and medical emergency, it could ruin their life.
This is an impossibility for the billionaire. No matter what they do or don’t do, they have an incomprehensible pile of money that is making them more piles of money every second of every day. They have a team of exorbitantly paid lawyers and handlers to manage their affairs. They have direct lines of communication with politicians through which to shape public policy so that it benefits them personally, and they have the money to make enormous contributions to these politician’s election campaigns to ensure leverage once they’re in office. They probably own a newspaper or social media platform just for funsies, and to keep the wheels of propaganda turning as they please.
Meanwhile, we have to work in order to survive. We are compelled by our inconvenient desire to stay alive to sell our labor in exchange for wages or a salary. It is an economic role that is not entered into willingly, but forced by necessity. We can work, or we can die.
