Somehow, being nonbinary required just as much constant mental and social maintenance as femininity had. I felt I had to actively try to be aware of how people perceived me, correct them when they misgendered me, think about what gendered messaging my clothing and hair choices communicated. My social world had changed and was now filled with queers, punks and theythems, but I was still obsessed with the image my appearance and mannerisms would project to the people around me, whether in exchange for a good show, I might be accepted and loved. I didn’t feel more at ease in my own skin. I had traded the straight jacket for a chest binder and couldn’t understand why to me they felt like the exact same thing.
