JUST A GIRL

I am a woman.
But when I was 18, I didn’t think so.
I had just finished high school and bought my first laptop with graduation money. With unfettered internet access for the first time in my life, I did what any teenage girl in 2013 would do.
I got addicted to porn.
Just kidding. I got obsessed with Tumblr.
I was a barely-out bi girl who two months earlier had been told that I couldn’t call myself bisexual because it was transphobic and denied the existence of more than two genders. I had no idea what the fuck any of this meant. Transphobia sounded really bad but… weren’t there two genders? I had never heard anything otherwise. But I had a crush on the friend who said it, so, brain empty, I nodded. There was something important I didn’t know about, that much was clear. But I had absolutely no idea what it was and I was already too scared to ask.
And suddenly it was right in front of me—the missing key.
